When you hear Mayko’s track ‘Submission’, you can -honest to god- feel the raw emotions of the track from the second it starts. Anger, pain, fear and frustration are what immediately come to mind, rushing into your body as you listen. It’s always been such a fascinating concept to me how much power music really holds. Artists are able to paint a picture of what they are feeling at a specific point in their life, but what really is the song special is when their audience is also experiencing those same emotions. Now THAT is when a song really hits hard. ‘Submission’ is a perfect example of this.

The track alone is obviously nuts but watching the music video really takes it to a whole new level. The video was directed by Mayko and edited by Steven Lake , who by the way KILLED it. Regardless of who you are or where you live, we as humans have all taken a hit this year. None of us expected to lose as much as we did in 2020. We’ve suffered tragedy not only in our personal lives but also as a country, which you can’t help but be angry about.

The intro of the music video leads in with footage of one of the many wildfires we experienced this past year. As the song begins to build along with the ash on the screen, you’re filled with tension. The whole concept of the video is raw footage of the riots and natural disasters we’ve experienced in 2020 and how these events have made us feel. Through each build up and drop in Submission, you witness more and more chaos in the world. It really makes you wonder, how did it get this bad?

Some words from Mayko himself on the creation of Submission:

“I created the original idea back in March when everyone was clearing out grocery stores and fearing the virus more than God. Not only was I afraid, but I was also angry. Angry that my biggest shows to date were canceled. Angry that I couldn’t socialize. Angry that so much was taken from us. I believe that the track acts as a direct outlet, conveying my initial feelings towards the climate. It was only a few months later that the idea began transcending feelings associated with more current events. I began working on this song while watching civil riots erupt. While watching California set ablaze. An overarching theme became apparent. Every single event, no matter what side one is on, has led to destruction. This is the idea that led to the music video.”

Submission is pretty much a home movie of this past year. We’ve been through a lot this year and sometimes you’ve gotta take a step back to process. I’m optimistic that things will turn up soon enough and I can’t wait to see what Mayko has in store for us when that happens. Maybe a light hearted, melodic tune? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

And don’t forget the song is available to stream on all platforms! Be sure to add it to your playlists ;)
